Islamists Militants in Northern Nigeria

The Washington Post reports that security forces in Nigeria have killed militants in the northern city of Maiduguri. The militants known as the Boko Haram sect had been blamed for the violence in the mostly Muslim region of Nigeria.  The government forces shelled and stormed the group’s mosque and headquarters Wednesday night, setting off a raging firefight with retreating militants.

The Humphrey Winterton Collection of East African Photographs:1860-1960

The Melville J Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University has created The Humphrey Winterton Collection of East African Photographs: 1860-1960.  This is a searchable collection of digitized photographs, which includes about 7,610 photographs depicting life, primarily in East Africa, between about 1860 and 1960.  A press release states “they include formal and informal portraits of Africans and their colonizers, photos of slaves and slave traders, and images depicting the building of railroads and urban areas and of traditional African life.  They represent the work of explorers, colonial officials, settlers, missionaries, military officers, travelers and early commercial photographers.”

 

 

First international conference on African digital libraries and archives

The first international conference on African digital libraries and archives was held in Addis Abba, Ethiopia, from July 1-3. The aim was “to bring together key African and international stakeholders to discuss critical policy issues and explore approaches and challenges facing Africa in relation to the digitisation of African resources; and promote ways of strengthening, coordinating and forging stronger links between African digitisation initiatives, networks, projects and policies”.  In the opening remarks  Lalla Ben Barka, deputy executive secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) “shared her concerns about a growing digital divide which she said may leave the poor more marginalised in the “new global community”.

NLM African Malaria Tutorial

View this video on You Tube, Julia Royall, chief on international programs, discusses the National Library of Medicine’s interactive African malaria tutorial.  The tutorial accessed through MedlinePlus is a collaboration of NLM and Makerere University Faculty of Medicine in Uganda.  It is available in both English and Luganda, includes information about how malaria spreads, the importance of treatment and techniques for prevention.
