This video summarizes the achievements of the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade (1981-1990) with photos and film footage. It highlights safe water achievements in Africa, the Arab States, Asia and Latin America.

This production traces the entertaining evolution of Africa's music from the rattle of drums by the light of a desert fire to the laid-back beat of Hugh Masekela, Dolly Rathebe and the Inkspots.

Shouting Silent (c2002). Director: Renee Rosen
Xoliswa Sithol, an adult orphan who lost her mother to AIDS in 1996, explores the devastation wrought on the orphaned children of South Africa by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Show Me the Rhythms for Dunun (c1998). Producer: Kalani
Demonstrates 10 traditional rhythms that compliment "Show me the rhythms for jembe". Teaches each pattern individually and then combines them to form a complete arrangement.

Show Me the Rhythms for Jembe (c1998). Director: Kalani
Kalani describes and demonstrates jembe (djembe) and dunun (junjun) drumming patterns for ten traditional Malinke rhythms. Each pattern is analyzed, played individually, then played simultaneously with other patterns in the rhythm. Western-style notation is provided for each rhythm. Jembe patterns are presented on v. 1-2, and dunan patterns on v. 3. The ancillary compact disc provides play-along accompaniment for practicing.


Sigaalow : town of dust (1983)
This film is about a refugee camp hidden away on the banks of a muddy river in East Africa. Highlights from the daily routine of these displaced Somalian nomads, as well as their farming, education and cultural practices are portrayed.

Silent Killer: The Unfinished Campaign Against Hunger (c2005). Producers: Hana Jindrova and John de Graff
Shows the face and causes of hunger around the world. Focuses on Kenya, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil. Highlights the "fome zero" project in Brazil that is taking massive steps to alleviate the hunger conditions there.

Simon & I (2001). Directors: Bev Palesa Ditsie, & Nicky Newman
"Simon and I recounts the lives of two giants in the South African gay and lesbian liberation movement, Simon Nkoli and the filmmaker herself, Bev Ditsie. The story is narrated by Bev, both as a personal statement and a political history. ... their relationship is viewed against a backdrop of intense political activism and the HIV/AIDS crisis"-- Container

Sisters of the Screen: African Women in the Cinema (2002). Producer: Beti Ellerson
Interviews of thirty-five women filmmakers from Africa and the African diaspora, interspersed with clips from their films.

Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952)
This classic action film stars Gregory Peck as a famed adventure writer examining his life while on a safari in the African mountains. It is based on a story by Ernest Hemingway.

Son of Africa (1996)
This BBC production employs a dramatic reconstruction, archival material and interviews with scholars such as Stuart Hall and Ian Duffield to provide the social and economic context of the 18th century slave trade. Equiano's narrative begins in the West African village where he was kidnapped into slavery in 1756. He vividly recalls the pestilence and horror of the Middle Passage.

A Son of Africa: The Slave Narrative of Olaudah Equiano (2004). Director: Alrick Riley
Originally released in 1996, the docudrama is based on the book, The interesting narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vaasa the African, which was the first widely read slave autobiography. When it was published in 1789, it fueled a growing anti-slavery movement in the U.S. and England. This production employs dramatic reconstruction, archival material and interviews with scholars. Equiano's narrative begins in the West African village where he was kidnapped into slavery in 1756. He was shipped to a Virginia plantation and then later sold again to a British naval officer. Here he learned to read and write, became a skilled trader, eventually bought his freedom and married into English society where he became a leading abolitionist.

Sonamoni (golden pearl) (1985)
Rohima and Gafur are now proud parents and concerned about the high rate of infant mortality due to diarrheal diseases. After Korim (the villain) cuts off their access to the community tubewell, they are forced to draw water from a nearby river. As a result of using river water, their baby gets diarrhea, but fortunately they are well acquainted with oral rehydration therapy.

The Songhai princess (1990)
Princess Nzinga, the daughter of a 15th century Songhai emperor is kidnapped from the palace by the Wicked Witch of the Mountains, and is rescued after many years and adventures by medical student Imhotep.

South Africa (c1999). Director: Shareef Cullis
On the 24th of February 1998 Vryburg High School became world news when white parents assaulted black students. As a result of the public outcry and media frenzy over this event, the government appointed a commission of enquiry. Furthermore, the Human Rights Commission began an investigation into racism and integration at 90 schools across the country. This is one story of the struggle to transform education in South Africa.

South Africa belongs to us (1980)
This intimate portrait of five black women demonstrates how apartheid impoverishes, dehumanizes and ultimately enslaves. It is the clearest introduction to the system of apartheid, its affect on family life and the singular economic and emotional burdens it inflicts upon black people.

Speaking Out: Women, AIDS and Hope (2002). Director: Joanne Burke
Profiles a remarkable HIV and AIDS support project in Bamako, Mali, and three brave women who work tirelessly on behalf of the infected community.

Spear of the nation (1986)
Thames Television provides the first overview of the African National Congress' goals, history and philosophy by going behind the scenes to get a true, unbiased picture of the ANC. In unusually candid interviews, some shot secretly in South Africa, President Oliver Tambo, Albertina Sisulu and other ANC veterans talk of the problems of the early days and speak with openess about the future.

State of Denial (c2003). Director: Elaine Epstein
South Africa is the country with the highest number of HIV+ people in the world. This video puts a human face on the millions affected by introducing six South Africans involved with the AIDS epidemic. It shows how they must fight not only the disease but the greed of the drug cartels and the incomprehensible inactivity of their own government to get treatment.

Study in Africa : new opportunities for American students (1997)
An overview of several U.S. study programs at a variety of African campuses; interviews with African university faculty, administrators and students. U.S. students studying there answer a number of questions.
