Locating Companies and Businesses by Area

From Biz Wiki

When writing a business plan or doing market research, it is often important to research potential clients, customers, or competitors. In particular, it might be a good idea to research how many companies in a specific industry are located in an area (county, state, city). To find out how many companies or businesses are in a particular area, there are a number of resources to try.

  1. Switchboard.com
This free Internet phone directory is a good place to start when looking for companies or businesses. The directory searches Yellow Page listings, and it can be searched by business name, category or keyword. Each business listing contains an address, phone number, and occasionally a web page.
  2. United States Economic Census
The Economic Census profiles American business every 5 years, from the national to the local level. The latest economic census was taken in 2002, and the data is still being released. The Economic Census will allow you to research the number of businesses in a particular industry by state, county, city, or metro area. The census information is organized by NAICS codes and contains data such as sales for a particular industry, as well number of employees. For help using the Economic Census, please vist the Guide to the 2002 Economic Census. Please note that the release of the 2002 data is ongoing, so if data is missing, use the 1997 Economic Census.
  3. Reference USA
Contains directory information on over 12 million businesses in the United States. Information for each business includes: name, address, contact person, telephone number, fax number, employee size range, estimated sales range, credit rating, SIC codes, lines of business, and names and titles of key personnel. Use the Custom Search to search for businesses that meet criteria that you select such as type of business (Yellow Pages options) and business location (Geography Selects).
