About the Serials Review Project
This page contains information about the Serials Review project that the library is working on during the summer. In order to meet budget reductions, the library needs to cut $375,000 from the acquisitions budget. As the Subject Specialist for the College of Business and the Department of Economics, I am charged with cutting approximately $85,000 from the three funds that I manage. This seems like quite a sum to cut, but I believe it is manageable.
Please note that I did not choose the amount that we need to cut from the funds I manage. The amount needed to be cut was allocated by the formula. If you have questions about the process, I encourage you to contact Jan Maxwell. Information about the serials review process and the new formula can be found on the Libraries' Serial Review Project page.
In order to facilitate the process, I have created a list of titles that I am recommending that we cancel. With such a huge amount of money being cut from our funds, I felt that it would be more convenient for me to suggest possible titles for cancellation, rather than burdening faculty with the chore of coming up with titles to cut. The list of titles are Serials, which are those things that the library pays for on an annual basis. Serial can be annual monograph series, reference books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and even databases. The video below explains the criteria for my selections, while also showing how to navigate the lists of titles (in spreadsheet form) below.
Video Explaining the process
The short video below explains the process, and shows how to navigate the spreadsheet.
List of Titles I'm Recommending for Cancellation
The list of titles that I am recommending for cancellation can be found in the spreadsheets below. The titles that I am recommending to cut are highlighted in Orange.
- Economics Titles Recommended for Cancellation (Excel 2003 File)
- The target amount for cancellation for the Economics fund is $16,474-$19,663
- Business Titles Recommended for Cancellation (Excel 2003 File)
- The target amount for cancellation for the Business fund is $60,356-$68,660
I also have to cut $4,650 dollars from a third fund, which pays for some Business and Economics databases. There's not anything in that fund that can really be canceled at this time, so I'm attempting to cancel enough from the other funds to alleviate the strain on this fund.
Note: Even if we inadvertently cancel a title that is needed again later, it's not that difficult to pick up the subscription again. Also, just a reminder, if you need an article that the library does not have, you can always request it via InterLibrary Loan.
Your comments are welcome
I definitely would appreciate your feedback in this process. If there are titles that I marked for cancellation that you think we should keep, please let me know via email. If there are titles that I have not marked for cancellation that we should cancel, please email me about those as well. Emailing me the titles AND the rationale for keeping/canceling them will be the best method for documenting the cancellation process. My email is boeninge@ohio.edu.
If you would like to talk to me about this process, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. I should be around all summer. If you’re out wondering around campus and just want to stop by, my office is on the second floor of Alden Library.
I'm looking to turn in a finalized list of titles to our Acquisitions Department by July 17. As stated before, if we inadvertently cancel a journal and it's needed later, we can always renew the subscription.
Once again, I appreciate any input you can provide in this process.
Thanks a bunch and have a great summer,
Chad
