Introduction

The Center for International Studies at Ohio University administers interdisciplinary degree programs in African Studies; Communication Developments; Development Studies; East Asia (forth coming); Latin American Studies, and Southeast Asian Studies. Several other University programs and departments also have had strong African involvements since the early 1950's. The Ohio State Center for African Studies and the Ohio University African Studies Program jointly operate a National Resource Center for African Studies (Title VI). For more information and access to additional local resources consult the African Studies Program Pages.

The Ohio University Library is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and has access to the large collection of Africa-related materials in CRL, and is also a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL).

Modeled after its arrangement with the Government of Malaysia (1987) the Ohio University has depository arrangements for the official documents of Botswana (1990), Swaziland (1991) and Guatemala(1997).

As a result of a series of linkage agreements and programs between the Botswana Ministry of Education and Ohio University, initially supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Ohio University Library has been designated as a North American Depository for official Botswana publications to meet the following goals.

  1. Enhancing the ability of the Botswana National Library Service to fulfill its functions as the National Library;
  2. Increasing the visibility of the Republic of Botswana in North America;
  3. Enriching the educational resources of Botswana materials available for both African and American students undertaking education in North America;
  4. Increasing the accessibility of Botswana to North American users.
