Text of the Depository Agreement
Between Ohio University Library and the
Botswana National Library Service
Summary of discussion held between Prof. Hwa-Wei Lee of Ohio University
and the BNLS senior
Management Team, on Monday, April 2, 1990, in the Director' s office.
1. Background
Ohio University Library will be a depository for Botswana materials, with a view to becoming a
resource center for researchers, students, and business people who are interested in Botswana.
This followed a visit to Ohio by President Masire last year.
2. Types of Information Sources to be Deposited
a) Materials providing general information on
Botswana, including business opportunities and
economic investment.
b) All government publications available for public
distribution.
c) Scholarly/Research Publications
- Archival/historical materials
- Current research publications.
3. Funding/Expenses
Ohio University Libraries will pay for all surface mail costs and any photo copying/microfilming
that will be required. This will be covered by an initial deposit of US $3000 during the first year.
The amount for future years will be determined later, based on costs during the first year.
BNLS will provide a report on the expenditure of the funds provided by O.U.L. at least once a
year to O.U.L.
4. Benefits
i) Ohio University Library will catalogue all Botswana publications into the OCLC
database and provide the National Library Service with a copy of the cataloguing
tape on a regular basis.
ii) Ohio University Library will publicize the existence of Botswana publications and
information available at O.U.L.
iii) Ohio University Library will provide information services for researchers,
government officials, Botswana students in the United States and others in business and
international trade, interested in Botswana.
iv) Ohio University Library and the Botswana National Library Service will jointly explore
sources of funding for the following programs/projects:
a) Establishing a microfilming operation at BNLS.
b) Staff internship at O.U.L.
v) Ohio University Library will assist the National Library Service in the planning for a
microfilming unit and provide a list of equipment and estimated costs.
vi) Ohio University Library will conduct a search of the Dissertation Abstracts on
CD-Rom for dissertations on or about Botswana and send the results to National Library
Service.
vii) Ohio University Library will conduct a search of its own collections for publications
relating to Botswana.
