The Ohio University Library

Ohio University Libraries consists of the main campus library, a remote storage facility, the Music Library, and five branch campus libraries. Named for former Ohio University President Vernon R. Alden, the main Alden Library houses over two million physical volumes, 2.5 million microform units and 500,000 non-book media and utilizes state-of-the-art networking, computer and electronic library systems. The Library is a founding member of OhioLink (Ohio Library and Information Network) which allows borrowing privileges to materials state-wide, and access to the full compliment of research databases and electronic journals. Alden Library is also a founding member of OCLC (Online Computer Library Center 1967) which evolved from an Ohio cooperative academic library cataloging network to today's world-wide library system. It is a member of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) and the Association for Research Libraries (ARL).

Special collections and departmental libraries include Cornelius Ryan World War II Papers; Morgan History of Chemistry; Southeast Asia Collection; Music Library, Fine Arts Library, Health Sciences Library, Shao You-Bao Overseas Chinese Documentation and Research Center; E. W. Scripps Papers; Edmund Blundon Collection of Romantic & Georgian Literature; and depositories for the U.S. Government, State of Ohio, and for publications of Botswana, Malaysia, Swaziland, and Guatemala.

The Library's international collections, especially the Southeast Asia Collection are recognized nationally and internationally. The first of its kind, the Alden Library is designated by the governments of these respective countries as an official repository for publications of Botswana, Malaysia, Swaziland, and Guatemala.

Except for "reference or reserve" materials, some media and software, there are no particular borrowing or use restrictions to off-campus users. Off-campus access to electronic resources however is sometimes not possible due to licensing restrictions.

Interlibrary Loan and Reference Services

The Ohio University attempts to obtain all Botswana Government publications and other Botswana material as well, especially for materials not readily available elsewhere. The Depository provides assistance in locating materials not within its local collections. Any Botswana materials within the Ohio University Libraries' collections can be obtained via the InterLibrary Loan through one's local library. Most Botswana materials have been cataloged and consulting ALICE, the Libraries' on-line catalog (telenet and web access) is a good place to start. Within staff expertise and time contraints, reference service in regards to Botswana topics are also offered. Either e-mail Theodore Foster at fosterth@ohiou.edu or write to Theodore Foster, Ohio University Libraries, Athens, OH 45701-2978 (USA).
