The Business of Baseball

Monday, April 18th, 2005

Whether your’re working on a project or just curious about the inner workings of our national pasttime, the Business of Baseball provides “research tools for those wishing to learn more about the business end of professional baseball.”

The site is broken into several areas, including Data (databases and spreadsheets), Relocation and/or Expansion (documentation by jurisdictions exploring relocation and/or expansion), Documents (various documents, both current and historical, dealing with issues within the business of baseball), Bios (biographies from members of SABR on persons within the business of baseball), Reading Material (suggested reading material from the Business of Baseball Committee of SABR), Interviews (interviews with individuals that have had, or still do impact the business of baseball), History, which chronicles key moments in baseball history as it relates to the business side of things. And, the BizBall Forums, a location where business of baseball articles are Blogged, and where discussion and commentary occur (registration required).

One thing that I found particularly appealing about this site is the Data section. There the site has downloadable Excel files of player salaries and team-by-team payroll.

Country Economic Analysis

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

When looking for information about a country’s economic strengths and weaknesses, one can always turn to encyclopedias and yearbooks for factual and statistical information. It is often easy to find some of a country’s economic indicators (GDP, CPI, GNP, etc.) freely available on the internet. But if you are looking for statistical information, combined with some analysis of the numbers, take a look at the following sources.

Economist Intelligence Unit
The EIU contains full-text reports on several dozen countries that provide country profiles (Country Profile section), economic and political trend analysis (Country Reports section), financial information (Country Finance section), and commercial information (Country Commerce section).

CountryWatch
Provides “country specific geopolitical intelligence on each of the 192 countries of the world. ” Includes basic information on each country, constantly updated news stories, links to official websites, etc. Topics include government, economy, investment climate, and social and environmental issues. Of particular interest in this database is the section called ‘Investment Overview’.

WorldMark Encyclopedia of the Nations
“Presents easy-to-understand information on 200 countries and dependencies from around the world. Entries discuss a variety of topics in detail, from banking and securities to climate, from government data to demographic statistics.” While this source does not contain an in-depth economic analysis of each country, it is a great source for country overviews.

Country Forecasts
This publication, which is updated every six months, is a “concise summary of the present prospects and future evolution of the climate for business in 100 countries. The information provided for each country presents and overview of its political and economic climate and social characteristics.” The current issue is dated October 2004 and is updated through September 15, 2004.

OECD Economic Surveys
These publications are available for a number of countries and provide very thorough analysis of a country’s current and forecasted economic conditions.

Finding Company Market Share Information

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

Once of the best places to look for market share information for a particular company is in the Market Share Reporter. This book is updated every year and contains market share information compiled from periodical literature. As described by the publisher:

Market Share Reporter presents comparative business statistics in a clear, straightforward manner, this resource provides an overview of U.S. companies, products and services. A convenient arrangement by four-digit SIC code helps business decisionmakers and researchers easily access needed data for more than 2,000 entries. Each entry features a descriptive title; data and market description; a list of producers/products along with their market share; and more.

The 2005 edition of Market Share Reporter also includes the World Market Share Reporter. As described by the publisher:

World Market Share Reporter includes nearly 1,670 entries cover 360 geographic locations the world over, providing world market share data and rankings on companies, products and services.

The book is very well organized and simple to use. While other print or electronic resources may provide additional information, this book is a great place to find market share information quickly.
