High Cost of Textbooks

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

Do you think your textbooks are too expensive?  According to NPR’s morning addition, some states agree, and they’re doing something about it.

More than a dozen states are considering laws that would restrict price increases for college textbooks. With many books now costing more than $100, college students and their families are facing huge bills on top of tuition costs.

MIT’s Dewey Research Advisor

Monday, July 24th, 2006

MIT Libraries has a resource callled the Dewey Research Advisor. The advisor, currently in beta release, lists common research questions and points to resources to help find the answers. This is a good model for a business research FAQ, and is definitely worth a look. I’ve seen several questions and answers in the guide that I get asked several times a quarter. It appears that Wharton uses an identical system, only they call it the Business FAQ. I’ve tried to incorporate something like this in the Biz Wiki, and both of these resources give me some new ideas to consider.

NPR’s Morning Edition had a story this morning about Best Buy’s corporate work environment.  The summary:

Blogs and RSS for Bibliographers

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

I’m giving a talk this morning to other bibliographers at our library. I’ve got 15 minutes to hit the high points of blogs and rss.

Why should a subject bibliographer read blogs?

  • Scan the environment and become more familiar with the subject
  • Get ideas from others
  • Become a part of a larger community

Why RSS?

  • If you’re going to read blogs, then RSS is the only way to go.
  • RSS is fast and easy.
  • RSS allows you to read what you want, when you want

Why create a blog?

  • Share your thoughts/ideas/links with others
  • Good mechanism for faculty and student outreach
  • Blogging automatically creates a knowledgebase
  • Link to and discuss cool sites/books/databases/resources
  • Understand more about a subject by writing about it

What other libraries/librarians are blogging?

How do I get started with RSS?
