Thomson One Banker works best with IE

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

The interface to Thomson One Banker was changed very recently.  With this change, Thomson One Banker does not work with Firefox.  If you try to use Thomson One Banker with Firefox, you will not get any error messages, nor will the database tell you to use Internet Explorer.  It simply will not work.  I prefer to use Firefox as my browser, so I called the Thomson support line.  Unfortunately the response I got was that the Thomson tech support team recommends Internet Explorer for all of the Thomson products.

Another database that will not work with Firefox is Mediamark Reporter.  It requires IE as well, but Mediamark will tell you that your browser “does not meet requirements.”

As far as I know, these are the only two business databases that we subscribe to that do not work with Firefox.  I’m hopeful that the developers will see a need to support other browsers, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.  However, I am pleased that at least  these databases work with IE 7.

Basics of Using GMID screencast now available

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

I’ve had quite a few questions recently that involved using GMID.  Admittedly, the database can be a little difficult for some people to use.  I have found that once you get the hang of the interface, the database allows a researcher to retrieve some remarkable information and export it in a variety of ways.

The Basics of GMID screencast demonstrates the basic navigation of GMID
and shows how to extract data from the database. This screencast lasts
approximately 6 minutes, and does contain some audio. Voiceovers will
be added as time permits.

I hope this screencast helps to make the database a little easier for researchers to use.  As always, comments about this screencast and others are appreciated.
