Consumer Packaged Goods Trends For The Next Decade from Nielsen Wire

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Nielsen Wire has just posted a report for Consumer Packaged Goods Trends For The Next Decade.

Demographic and economic shifts over the next ten years will dramatically reshape the growth of consumer packaged goods (CPG), according to new research from Nielsen which was presented today at the Consumer 360 conference in Orlando.

In just ten years time, the face of America will change: fewer households will have children, the population will age and lower-income consumers will expand. Additionally, the majority of new families will be multi-cultural in less than two decades.

Economic impact of the swine flu

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

My brother and his wife recently had to change their travel plans for their honeymoon. They had originally planned to go to a resort in Mexico, but a week before their trip, they changed their reservations to a resort in the Bahamas. Unfortunately, they were not able to recoup the costs of the air travel to Mexico, but they were able to swap the resort reservations evenly. I wonder how many others are putting off travel for fear of the swine (H1N1) flu? This has a huge potential for damaging our already wounded economy. I did some quick searching, and found some resources on the economic impact of a pandemic flu.

From Business Week:

Many sources are comparing the flu to the avian (bird) flu. Swine Flu: Economic Implications has a good comparison of the two flus.

PandemicFlu.gov, a site from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, also takes a look a the impact of the flu.  The site also links to some older, although still relevant, publications from the IMF and the World Bank.

The World Bank has a Influenza A (H1N1) Questions and Answers section that addresses health and economic questions surrounding the issue.

This is a test post from my Palm Treo 755p. I am using the Opera Mini browser on my phone, and WordPress works surprisingly well with the browser. I’m posting using the QuickPress feature of WordPress. This could potentially be useful, as I could enter brief posts from my pphone when needed.

Business Plan Of Pirates

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

NPR has an interesting article called Behind The Business Plan Of Pirates Inc.  The article takes a look at the actual business dealings that go into supporting pirates.  It’s definitely worth a look, as it discusses venture capital, legal issues, catering, and more.   Shows you can do almost anything with a business degree, I guess. ;)
