Library Catalogs (for finding books, journals, videos, etc.)

Library catalogs generally include references for materials like books, journals, and videos owned by a particular library or group of libraries. They do not include articles within journals, and most (including OU's catalog) don't include ERIC documents. To access those materials, use Indexes and Abstracts

ALICE: Ohio University Libraries' Online Catalog (Web version)

ALICE is the name of the online library catalog for all campuses of Ohio University: Athens, Chillicothe, Eastern, Lancaster, Southern, and Zanesville. (For more information on ALICE, see ALICE's Help Screens.)

All of the books in the Children's Collection are included in ALICE and can be searched by all of the normal searching techniques including author, title, subject, keyword, and call number. Be sure to note the exact location when taking down the call number, e.g., Alden Child Ref., Alden Child Awards, Alden Children's, or Alden Child Pict Bk. (You may also find audiobooks of children's titles which are located in Alden Microforms or older children's books which are located in Alden Library Annex.)

To find books of nonfiction on a particular topic, do a subject search. To find books of fiction or nonfiction on a particular topic, do a keyword search rather than a subject search.

When doing a subject or a keyword search, it is usually helpful to limit your search to the Children's Collection. To do this:

  1. Click on the Modify/Sort Button button.
  2. Open the box next to WHERE item is located
  3. Select Alden Children's
  4. Click on Limit/Sort items retrieved using above data.

OhioLINK Central Catalog

The OhioLINK Central Catalog represents the combined holdings of more than seventy libraries around the state. (See our page on OhioLINK borrowing.)

WorldCat

WorldCat is an international database for bibliographic information catalogued by many thousands of libraries. Consists of over 30 million bibliographic records. This is a good database for identifying materials not held in Ohio libraries. You can't borrow directly through this database. If you find materials here that are not available through OhioLINK, use Ohio University's Interlibrary Loan service.
