Classics Journals

This page contains what I hope is a comprehensive list of journals related to Classical Studies that are readily available either in Alden Library or online. In addition to listing the titles with live links to ALICE for holdings information (the first column of the table), I've attempted to enumerate databases for searching each title as well as connections to those titles available online.

Article Databases

In terms of indexing, I am assuming that most of these titles are indexed in L'Annee Philologique, but its online version covers only a relatively short time span and is quirky to use. For this reason, in the third column I've indicated which journals are indexed in any of three "general purpose" article databases, which can be used for quick and easy searching for many Classics journals. These databases are:

Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI)

This database, which begins coverage with 1980 and is updated weekly, covers major journals in all areas of the arts and humanities. In addition to being useful as a general database for finding articles, it also serves as a database of citations in articles. In other words, if Professor X published an article in, say, 1990, you can search AHCI to see how many times that article has been cited by other scholars since that time.

Academic Search Complete (ASP)

This is an excellent database for beginning researchers in almost any field of study. It indexes around 3500 popular magazines and scholarly journals, and provides online full-text for a substantial number of them. Dates of coverage vary on a title by title basis, but it generally covers only the last 5-10 years or so of most titles. While certainly far from comprehensive for Classics, it can provide access to some online journals not available elsewhere, notably Mnemosyne.

Periodicals Index Online

This is a retrospective index, whose coverage goes back to Year One (more than 200 years in some cases) of more than 4000 journals in the humanities and social sciences. Besides the titles listed here, it indexes many Classics journals not in our collection at all.

Full-Text Online

Here are a few brief notes about the several providers of full-text journal articles. All of these sources are available to all campuses of Ohio University, except JSTOR which is only available to members of the Athens and Eastern campuses. Off-campus access will require a brief login process.

Electronic Journal Center (EJC)

Part of OhioLINK, the EJC is a permanent repository for online journals on all subjects from a number of major scholarly publishers.

Ingenta

Ingenta is one of the major providers of online journals in all subjects, including a few titles in Classical Studies. The site can be slow at times.

JSTOR

A major source for retrospective collections of journals. Typically, JSTOR's holdings of a journal will go back to Volume 1 and continue up until a few years ago. This "embargo" preventing the inclusion of recent volumes is intended to protect the interests of the journal publishers. JSTOR can be searched for keywords within a journal or group of journals.

Oxford

Oxford University Press has a site for its own journals.

UC Press

The University of California Press has mounted a few years of Classical Antiquity on its own server.

Other Electronic Journals: In recent years, a number of electronic classical journals have been appearing on the Internet. Among these are the Didaskalia: Ancient Theater Today, Electronic Antiquity, Pomoerium, and several others.
