The library has several sources for broadcast transcripts from U.S. radio and television, as well as a few recommendations for finding news video archives. Keep in mind that no one database will have every show from a particular network, so for example, you may have to search a couple of databases that contain CBS transcripts before you find the one that has the program Face the Nation.

Library Databases

Lexis Nexis Academic

ABC, Al-Jazeera, CBS, CNN, CNBC, NBC, Fox, MSNBC, NewsHour and more. For a complete list, go to the Lexis Nexis home page and click the "i" next to TV and Radio Broadcast Transcripts.

All of the sources may be searched at once by selecting the checkbox provided. To search transcripts for just one or a few sources, click the Sources tab. Search for a source and select it. Repeat if additional sources are desired. Click OK to go the Power Search page where keywords may be entered.


Factiva

CBS, BBC, CNN, ABC, CNBC, FOX, NPR and more. For a complete list, click the box next to Sources, then choose Transcripts under Publications -- by Type. Search all transcripts by clicking on the word transcripts. Search individual or a few transcripts by clicking on the individual titles to add them to your search.

Newspaper Source

CBS, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, Fox (no ABC, NBC) To search for transcripts: Click the Publications button toward the top of the database home page. Then in the box next to Browse Publications, enter the call letters of a news or radio network (NPR, CBS, etc.) and select the radio button that says "By Subject and Description." The search results will include any program from that network contained in the database (60 Minutes, The Early Show, etc.)

Television News Archive from Vanderbilt University (1968- )

Index to summaries of news stories from major U.S. networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, PBS, CSPAN, MSNBC, CNBC and Fox) dating back to 1968. Recent CNN nightly news broadcasts may be viewed online within 72 hours of original broadcast (requires RealOne media player which can be downloaded for free at RealNetworks) Tapes of news programs may be ordered for a fee.

  • Faculty and graduate students may order videotape duplications of entire broadcasts, or compilation tapes of individual news stories specified by the borrower. Contact your department's Library Bibliographer. Do not order directly through the TV News Archive website; Alden Library subscribes to this database and can assist in borrowing tapes. For a fee, the Television News Archive will make a LENDING COPY that must be returned by Alden Library to Vanderbilt University at a pre-arranged date. Please allow at least 2 weeks for the tape(s) to arrive. Loan period is typically 30 days but requests to keep tapes longer are usually honored by the Archive.

Full text translated and English-language news and information from foreign media generally available with 24 - 72 hours from the time of the original publication or broadcast. sources in this database

Videorecordings

The library may have videorecordings of individual programs in its collections. Search the ALICE catalog by Title of the specific program name such as 60 Minutes or 20/20. Click the Repeat search in OhioLINK button to expand your search to over 80 OhioLINK libraries.

Microform / CD-ROM

The library has some transcripts on microfilm or CD-ROM

Try searching a television program or network website to see if there is a program archive. Some programs with known archives are listed here.

  • Online NewsHour Video Search Search online transcripts / selected audio segments from the PBS program NewsHour with Jim Lehrer (1999- ) or view selected video segments of the program via streaming video (2000- ).
  • NOW with David Brancaccio (was called NOW with Bill Moyers until 2005) Search by keyword or browse the Archives from 2002-2007. Read transcripts or watch segments with RealPlayer.
