Early Childhood Education
The purpose of this guide is to highlight library resources at Ohio University and to provide links to Internet resources for the field of Early Childhood Education.
Most professional librarians serve as subject bibliographers for one or more academic departments or programs. They work with faculty members to develop the library's collection, promote its use and provide library instruction.

- Indexes some journals not included in ERIC or PsycInfo
- Coverage is 1986 to the present. It is updated quarterly.
- Current and bound issues are located in the Reference Department in the Index/Abstract shelving area. The call number is Ref HQ 750 A1 C47.
Education Abstracts
- Indexes 400 international English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and book series in the field of education.
- Includes books reviews from those publications.
- Coverage of the electronic version is 1983 to the present. It is updated monthly.
- Earlier years, 1929-1983, are on the Reference Index Shelves under L11 .E383.
- Availability: all on-campus computers with web access; from off-campus, Ohio University students, faculty, and staff have access through a login process.
ERIC
- Indexes approximately 900 journals in the field of education and related fields. Also indexes the ERIC document collection.
- Coverage is 1966 to the present. It is updated monthly.

PsycInfo
- Indexes approximately 1300 journals in the field of psychology and related disciplines, such as counseling, social linguistics, medicine, law, physiology, business, psychiatry, and anthropology. Also indexes bookd, chapters within books, and dissertations.
- Comprehensive and international in scope. Indexes materials in 27 languages from 46 countries. About 11% of the items indexed are not in English.
- Coverage of the current file is 1967 to the present. The current file is updated monthly. There is also a Historic PsycInfo file for 1887-1966.
- Online tutorial
- Availability: all on-campus computers with web access; from off-campus, Ohio University students, faculty, and staff have access through a login process.
Library catalogs generally include references for materials like books, journals, and videos owned by a particular library or group of libraries. They do not include articles within journals, and most (including Ohio University's catalog) don't include ERIC documents. To access those materials, use Indexes and Abstracts.

WorldCat is an international database for bibliographic information catalogued by many thousands of libraries. Consists of over 30 million bibliographic records. This is a good database for identifying materials not held in Ohio libraries. You can't borrow directly through this database. If you find materials here that are not available through OhioLINK, use Ohio University's Interlibrary Loan service.

These sites are gateways to a variety of Web sites that address issues and offer services and products of interest to students and professionals in the field of Early Childhood Education.
Early Childhood Education On Line Web Site
"Exists to promote and facilitate information management and exchange, and to serve as a resource and benefit for all children, their families, and all people who help them grow and learn." Maintained by a College of Education faculty member at the University of Maine, this site is a non-commercial presentation of Web sites links related to ECE arranged by categories such as Curriculum and Environments, Diversity, Observation and Assessment. A bare-bones approach, but fairly comprehensive.
Early Childhood Education (ECE) Web Guide
"The Early Childhood Education Web Guide seeks to provide childcare professionals with the most up-to-date Internet resources." Organizes links to Web sites in six categories: Child Development, Anti-Bias Resources, Discipline and Guidance, Health and Safety, Learning Environment, Professionalism, and Program Management. Also provides a search engine for all the ECE sites listed. A very good site to start from.
Education World: Early Childhood Center
"Created to celebrate and support the creativity and dedication of those who participate in the education of young children. Teachers, parents, aides, and administrators are encouraged to explore these resource and share your ideas for working with young children." Covers a broad range of topics from teaching ideas to children development to assessment/intervention. Includes articles, reviews, and many links to relevant sites. Heavy with advertising, but there's lots of value here.
Association and Organization Sites
ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education
Located at the University of Illinois/Urbana, this ERIC clearinghouse contributes to the ERIC database "in the areas of child development, the education and care of children from birth through early adolescence, the teaching of young children, and parenting and family life." The Clearinghouse provides information services to parents and educators, publishes books, ERIC digests, resource lists, a research journal, and a newsletter. The web site provides access to the EECE Clearinghouse services and publications.
National Association for the Education of Young Children
NAEYC is "the nation's largest and most influential organization of early childhood educators and others dedicated to improving the quality of programs for children from birth through third grade." Their Web site provides descriptions of their mission, philosophy, publications and programs.
National Association of Child Care Professionals
This association's "goal is to improve, enhance and strengthen the credibility of the people who lead the child care industry by providing membership services and benefits." The site describes their publications, programs, and has a Yellow Pages of child care professionals for the U.S.
National Childcare Information Center
"A national resource that links information and people to complement, enhance, and promote the child care delivery system, working to ensure that all children and families have access to high-quality comprehensive services." Provides links to articles and publications, primarily from US government agencies, on a variety of child care topics. Full-text issues of their journal Child Care are here. FAQs include information helpful to starting and operating a a child care facility and information about funding opportunities. Their list of "Internet Links" is extensive; while not categorized, the links are included in a search feature.
National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care
The Center's primary mission is "to promote health and safety in out-of-home child care services. " The Web site contains the full-text of the performance standards guidelines published in 1992 and presents the child care licensure regulations for all 50 states and Washington D. C. Also has links to other child health and safety sites.

"The Gateway to Educational Materials is a Consortium effort to provide educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites. Teachers, parents, administrators can search or browse The Gateway and find thousands of high quality educational materials, including lesson plans, activities, and projects."
Preschool Education: Discover the Fun in Learning
This site is designed for teachers and provides activities, lesson plans, teaching tips, classroom printables, and coloring pages, and lots of other practical resources. One of the best of this type of site. |
