Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a database that allows searching through many papers, books, and conference proceedings that publishers have allowed Google to index. This is a good tool that can be used for many specific tasks including: finding articles, books, conference proceedings. It can also be used to correct citations, track down the location of unknown items, check which papers are citing other papers, etc. It is a very powerful tool however it can be frustrating due to the fact that it can yield very large amounts of items.

Running a simple search will yield a large number of results. At the time of this search it gave us approximately 215,000 results. As shown in the following picture.

Two important things to note:

  1. Google Scholar gives you a listing of articles that cited the publications that you find. This can be important as citing articles are typically similar to the article you are looking at or at least make comparisons of the article. So you may be interested in what they are because they may suit your research.
  2. There is a Find it with OLinks link that you can use to check and see if Ohio University Libraries subscribes to the article that you are interested in. This works just like the find it links that are found in the majority of subscription databases that Ohio University provides to staff, students, and faculty. This service can actually be used on campus or off campus. If you are on campus Google Scholar automatically detects that you are using an Ohio University IP address and will turn this feature on for you. You can also enable this off campus and here is how to do it.
Enabling Find it with OLinks off campus for Google Scholar

1. On the front page of Google Scholar click on the Scholar Preferences button.
