Example of Finding and Acquiring a Standard that Alden Library Does Not Own

Case - Initial Search

A mechanical engineering graduate student is working on research pertaining to slings and wire rope. In searching through the various suggested resources it is discovered that there are standards available at the ASME homepage. You will want to note the exact title of the standard because you will need that when you search other databases to see if you can get it via those resources. In this case the exact title of the standard is B30.9 - 2006 Slings. The search that I will be running later will only use the first part of the phrase B30.9.

Check Library Resources:

Alden Library's Catalog - Alice

Occasionally Alden Library will own specific standards. For this example we can check the local catalog by looking in Alice. In checking the local library catalog Alice it is discovered that Ohio University does not own a physical copy of the standard. The standard's identification number can be treated just like the title of a book; I ran the search as a title however you can also run the search as a keyword.

OhioLink Catalog

We did not find the standard in ALICE so next we want to check and see if any other schools in the OhioLINK consortia own the item as we could borrow it from them. Click on the Repeat Search in OhioLink button (both are circled in the example above) to see if the item can be obtained through OhioLink.

WorldCAT - Books in Libraries Worldwide

In this example I use WorldCat a catalog of books that are at libraries worldwide. If the item is available in WorldCat and at a college or university then there is a good chance that you can Interlibrary Loan the item. If the book is available at Ohio University the search results will indicate this with the words "Ohio University" highlighted in green.

Item Located - Order Through InterLibrary Loan

Since the item is available at several colleges or universities we can go ahead and order the item through Interlibrary Loan. The standard located in this search is the 2003 version. As such it might be necessary to direct order the standard from ASME. If the item were not available in WorldCat then the next step would be to contact Mike Wilson.
