Abstracts and Indexes

PsycInfo

  • Indexes approximately 1300 journals in the field of psychology and related disciplines, such as counseling, social linguistics, medicine, law, physiology, business, psychiatry, and anthropology. Also indexes bookd, chapters within books, and dissertations.
  • Comprehensive and international in scope. Indexes materials in 27 languages from 46 countries. About 11% of the items indexed are not in English.
  • Coverage of the current file is 1967 to the present. The current file is updated monthly. There is also a Historic PsycInfo file for 1887-1966.

  • Availability: all on-campus computers with web access; from off-campus, Ohio University students, faculty, and staff have access through a login process.

Social Sciences Citation Index
  • Indexes articles and citations from over 1700 international journals in all areas of the social sciences. Because the information stored about each article includes the article's cited reference list (often called its bibliography), you can also search the databases for articles that cite a known author or work.
  • Coverage of source journals is 1980 to date. Cited references can come from any time period. It is updated weekly.

  • Availability: all on-campus computers with web access; from off-campus, Ohio University students, faculty, and staff have access through a login process.

Social Sciences Index
  • Indexes articles in major social sciences journals.
  • Coverage from 1983 to the present. It is updated monthly.
  • Availability: all on-campus computers with web access; from off-campus only users of DialNet.

Social Services Abstracts
  • Indexes articles on anthropology, area studies, communication, economics, ethnic studies, geography, human services, international relations, law, police sciences, political sciences, population studies, psychiatry, psychology, public adminstration, public health, social work, sociology, women's studies.
  • Selective coverage of about 400 journals.
  • Coverage from 1980 to the present. It is updated monthly.
  • Availability: all on-campus computers with web access; from off-campus only users of DialNet.

SOCindex with Full Text
  • Comprehensive article database with abstracts for more than 590 "core" Sociology journals dating back to 1895. In addition, this file provides data mined from more than 500 "priority" coverage journals as well as 1,040 "selective" coverage journals.
  • Also includes indexing for books, monographs, conference papers, and other sources.

"an electronic guide to information on adolescent issues. It is a service of the Center for Adolescent Studies at Indiana University. Educators, counselors, parents, researchers, health practitioners, and teens can use ADOL to find Web resources" relating to issues important to adolescents and those in contact with them.

Child and Family Web Guide
"Created by faculty in the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University, in collaboration with academic librarians at Tufts' Tisch Library and the Society for Research in Child Development, the WebGuide identifies, describes and evaluates web sites that contain the most credible information available on a given topic. There are six categories of information: Family, Education, Health, Typical Development, Childcare, and Activities. The first five categories contain sites with research-based information that is evaluated by a team of child development graduate students. The sixth category, Activities, contains sites with information about specific programs and things to do -- organized by region. This category, which does not involve research-based information, was added at the request of parents."

Families and Social Policy

Families and Work Institute "a non-profit organization that addresses the changing nature of work and family life. We are committed to finding research-based strategies that foster mutually supportive connections among workplaces, families, and communities." Includes information about their research and publications, including "The Fatherhood Project."

Alan Guttmacher Association "a non-profit organization focused on sexual and reproductive health research, policy analysis and public education."

American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry "Facts for Families and Other Resources" provide concise and up-to-date information on issues that affect children, teenagers, and their families.

American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences

American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy A professional organization with more than 23,000 members. Their site provides brief full-text publications and other information intended for family members seeking information relating to health and relationship issues. Information about the association, the field of marriage and family therapy, and ethical issues is included.

American Geriatrics Association "The premier professional organization of health care providers dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all older adults." There are many links to organizations and groups concerned with the health of older people.

American Sociological Association The primary association for sociologists and social researchers. The site has three sections: for sociologists, for students, for the public.

Association for Career and Technical Education

Gerontological Society of America A professional organization for professionals interested in aging across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Sections include biological, medical, social, behavioral, and policy groups. The Online Resources list provides links to a wide range of other resources.

National Association of Social Workers "organization that promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers. NASW also seeks to enhance the effective functioning and well-being of individuals, families, and communities through its work and through its advocacy." Both Advocacy" and "Practice" sections include documents relevant to those interested in family issues. Links focus on social work, advocacy, child abuse, health, and mental health.

National Council on Family Relations

National Council on the Aging "association of organizations and professionals dedicated to promoting the dignity, self-determination, well being, and contributions of older persons. ämembers include senior centers, area agencies on aging, adult day services, faith congregations, senior housing, health centers, employment services, and consumer organizations. Many leaders from academia, business, and labor also join NCOA to support our mission and work."

SIECUS: Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States "a national, nonprofit organization which affirms that sexuality is a natural and healthy part of living. Incorporated in 1964, SIECUS develops, collects, and disseminates information, promotes comprehensive education about sexuality, and advocates the right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices."

Society for Research in Child Development The primary professional association in the field of child development, with a members hip of approximately 5,500 researchers, practitioners, and human development professionals in 50 countries.

National Survey of America's Families families "provides a comprehensive look at the well-being of adults and children and reveals sometimes striking differences among the 13 states studied in depth.
