The purpose of this guide is to highlight library resources at Ohio University, and to provide links to Internet resources for the field of Food and Nutrition.

Food Science and Technology Abstracts
Availability: All Athens campus computers with web access, plus DialNet. Other off-campus access requires a password.

  • Published by the International Food Information Service, FSTA includes abstracts from more than 2000 international sources reporting on topics of interest by food scientists, technologists, product developers, and marketers in the food industry.
  • FSTA covers all areas of food science, food technology, and human nutrition, including basic food science, biotechnology, toxicology, packaging, and engineering.

Availability: Unrestricted access. The National Library of Medicine is now offering totally *free* Web access to MEDLINE via their PubMed system.
  • A project of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  • Developed in conjunction with publishers of biomedical literature as a search tool for accessing literature citations and linking to full-text journals at Web sites of participating publishers.
  • Citations are drawn primarily from MEDLINE and PreMEDLINE.
  • PubMed also provides citations outside the scope of MEDLINE, citations from dates before a journal was indexed in MEDLINE, and citations from additional life science journals.

General

Arbor Nutrition Guide
This site includes links to clinical, applied, and food science sites. Topics covered range from sports nutrition to food safety. There are also links to sites containing information about nutrition software, pictures, and multimedia. Intended for nutrition professionals; Arbor's scope is more international than other nutrition metasites.

Blonz Guide to Nutrition, Food Science and Health
One of the larger meta sites for nutrition available today. In addition to the hundreds of links, there is a huge selection of search engines to choose from. The guide itself is comprised of the traditional subject areas i.e., food resources, companies and associations; nutrition, food and health resources; and health, medical and wellness publications.

The Food Resource
From Oregon State University. Lists foods and food ingredients, providing Web sites, extensive lists of references, and images (.JPEG primarily) of each.

Food Science Central
From the publishers of Food Science and Technology Abstracts (see above), this site provides access to thousands of food-related websits, scientific articles, research reports, a current awareness service, and much more.

Nutrition Navigator
The Tufts University Nutrition Navigator is a online rating and review guide to nutrition sites. The Web sites are reviewed by Tufts nutritionists and are updated quarterly. The reviews include the date of the review, site name (the URL is not listed but the site name is hot linked), sponsor, type of organization, intended audience, the sections reviewed, ratings of the content and usability, an overall rating, and commentary.

Useful Links to External Food-Related WWW Resources
Produced by the University of Reading, (UK) Department of Food Science and Technology, this site's contents are organized by geographic region and special topic areas. This is a good source of international information, food safety, and food engineering information.


Government Information

Nutrition.gov
A clearinghouse for all kinds of nutrition-related materials from various US government agencies. The links probably appeal mostly to professionals looking for updates on government-sponsored nutrition programs, food safety legislation, and health statistics, but there's much here for the consumer too.

USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion
Large US government site that features materials on the Dietary Guidelines and the Food Guide Pyramid, as well as resources for educators.

USDA Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC)
One of the specialized information centers at the National Agricultural Library, this site connects readers to the vast nutrition-related resources of the National Agricultural Library with clear and easy navigation. Specialized topics include information about healthy school meals, WIC, food safety, and foodborne illness education. Many of the publications are available full-text. Extensive links to external sources are well organized. The site includes a search engine.

USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory
The USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Release contains the nutrient content of over 5,900 foods. The site also provides access to a large number of food composition data sets, including sugar, isoflavones, trans-fatty acid, carotenoid, and Vitamin K content of selected foods. These databases and their documentation may be searched by keyword and downloaded in a variety of formats.


Organizations

American Dietetic Association
The site describes itself as "Your Link to Nutrition and Health" and is a good source of accurate and reliable information. The "Healthy Lifestyle" section features nutrition information, advice, and FAQs for consumers. Part of the site is intended for professionals, with organizational issues and details, professional meetings, employment opportunities, and professional publications.

American Society for Nutritional Sciences (ASNC)
ASCN is the premiere organization for clinical nutritionists in the United States. This site provides a variety of information including position papers, press releases, an archives of lobbying efforts and legislative information, meetings, employment opportunities, and external links to other organizations and resources. Many of the resources are full-text in HTML and PDF formats.

Institute of Food Technologists
IFT "advances the science and technology of food through the exchange of knowledge." Their site provides scientific information, standards, legislative issues, in addition to organizational governance, organizations, news, awards and employment information.

International Food Information Council (IFIC)
A nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to disseminate scientifically sound information about food safety and nutrition. This site includes a variety information, much of it full-text, about food safety and nutrition; an extensive directory of organizations, agencies, and associations; Food Insights, a bi-monthly newsletter; and a glossary of food-related terms. Includes information tailored to the needs of reporters and educators.


Nutrition Analysis Tools

Nutrition Analysis Tool
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign developed this web tool to assist users in analyzing food for a variety of nutrients. Users are guided (with or without step-by-step help) through inputting quantity, type of food, and analyzing it for specific nutrients. The advanced features section offers alternate food sources for correcting excesses or deficiencies in nutrients.

The "Virtual" Nutrition Center
This is the nutrition component of Martindale's Health Science Guide 2001. Among the categories of resource links found at this site are: metabolic pathways and genetic maps, interactive anatomy browsers, online journals, nutrition literature and patent searches, dictionaries and glossaries, online nutrition calculators, and courses, tutorials, and databases. Martindale's vast array of reference sites is also found here.

Fast Food Facts--Interactive Food Finder
The information in the database is based on the book Fast Food Facts by the Minnesota Attorney General's Office. This site provides a flexible search interface to a database of fast-food restaurant nutritional information. The search may focus on a particular restaurant or particular nutritional components across all or any of the restaurants in the database.


Special Topics

Children's Nutrition Research Center
From Baylor University College of Medicine, this site answers questions, reports on new research, and provides sound advice about child nutrition in an attractive and user-friendly manner.

FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition
This complex site provides access to many government resources on nutrition and is best used with a specific topic in mind due to its sheer size.

Feeding America
Digitized, fully searchable archive of 76 of "the most important and influential American cookbooks from the late 18th to early 20th century."

Vegetarian Resource Group
A substantive, well-organized, and balanced site that appears able to promote and explain vegetarianism without appearing strident or overly political. Easy to read and navigate, it provides news, recipes, nutrition information, links, and ideas for those interested in becoming or remaining vegetarians.
