Accord Between

THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND
SPORTS OF THE GOVERNMENT OF
GUATEMALA & OHIO UNIVERSITY

For by which it is agreed to send publications from Guatemala to Ohio University in the United States of America.

To increase interchange and awareness of Guatemala among officials, researchers, corporations, and the citizens of the United States of America and to enrich the educational experience of students from Guatemala and elsewhere in North America, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and Ohio University agree that the Ohio University Libraries will be the receiver of the publications from Guatemala this as far as they are not affected by what is determined by Articles 3, 13, and 14 of the Law for the Protection of the Cultural Patrimony of the Nation, Decree No. 26-97 of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala.

To implement this agreement, the Ministry of Culture and Sports hereby designates the Director of the National Library as its representative, who will identify, acquire, and ship materials for the depository to the Ohio University Libraries at appropriate intervals. Such publications shall include all government publications for public distribution, available archival materials, historical, archeological, scientific, contemporary artistic, scholarly/ research publications, and publications providing general information on Guatemala, including business opportunities and economic investment in print or microformat as well as representative materials in other media such as musical and video cassettes and CD-ROMs.

To accomplish the goals of this agreement, Ohio University will undertake to publish news of this agreement and regularly publicize the existence of the depository to potential American audiences and will cooperate with the Embassy of Guatemala to inform students from Guatemala of the existence of the depository and the availability of publications. Ohio University has designated the Ohio University Libraries as its representative to effect this agreement.

Moreover, Ohio University will see that the publications in the depository are entered into an appropriate national and international database and the Libraries' catalog on the Internet to enable persons across the nation to be able to identify the resources in the depository. These materials will be available for consultation at Ohio University or may be borrowed through interlibrary loan.

It is further agreed that the designated representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and of Ohio University will periodically consult on further avenues of cooperation to improve library and information services in Guatemala and to increase access to information on Guatemala in the United States of America and other areas of mutual benefit.

The present accord is for an indefinite time. It could be terminated by any of the parties without expression of cause, having to notify the other party with an anticipation of six months.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we sign this agreement in Guatemala City, Republic of Guatemala, on September 24, 1997.
