Guatemala Depository Ohio University Libraries

About the Depository

On September 24, 1997, the Ministry of Culture and Sports of The Government of Guatemala and Ohio University signed an Accord designating Ohio University Libraries a North American Depository for Guatemala publications.

This arrangement is modeled after earlier arrangements with the Government of Malaysia (1987), Botswana (1989), and Swaziland (1991).

The agreement is designed to help meet the following goals:

1. Enhancing the ability of the Biblioteca Nacional de Guatemala to fulfill its functions as the National Library;
2. Increasing the visibility of Guatemala and its culture in North America;
3. Enriching the educational resources of Guatemala materials available for both international and American students undertaking education in North America;
4. Increasing the accessibility of Guatemala materials to North American users.

Ohio University attempts to obtain all Guatemala Government publications, especially for materials not readily available elsewhere. The Depository provides assistance in locating materials not within its local collections. Any Guatemala materials within the Ohio University Libraries' collections can be obtained via the InterLibrary Loan through one's local library.

Most Guatemala materials have been cataloged and are included in ALICE, our online catalog. Within staff expertise and time constraints, reference service in regards to Guatemala topics is also offered.
