Latin America -- Newspapers and Current Events

If you are looking for to see if the Ohio University Libraries have a particular newspaper, you should do a Periodical Title search in ALICE for the name of the newspaper.

Latin American weekly report is a weekly newsletter, and excellent resource for up-to-date news items regarding Latin American business, politics, and economics.

infotree icon Searching InfoTree under News and Current Events yields a list of potential resources finding for news sources, current and retrospective materials. For campus users the three sites below have good Latin American content:

Global Newsbank
has English-language news articles from over 1000 translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, wire services, newspapers, magazines and government documents around the world. Off-Campus users may not be able to access this.
 
World News Connection
This is a general resource containing full text English translations of news from foreign media.
 
Lexis Nexis Academic Universe
Click news to access current events full text materials (past 10 years or more from newspapers, magazines and journals). However, note that this site provides full-text access to other information in a wide range of subject areas. Off-Campus users may not be able to access this.

NY Transfer - Information on Latin America
Links and information resources on Latin America, mainly with a leftist perspective. Maintained by New York Transfer, which publishes Intelligence Online. In English.

Latin American Magazines and Journals

Holdings for journals. Recent issues of journals and magazines currently being received by the Library are located in the Current Periodicals Collection, where they are shelved in alphabetical order, not by call number. Browsing the Current Periodicals area is one way to get an idea of the range of titles available.

As with newspapers (above), if you are looking for a particular title, you should do a Periodical Title search in ALICE for the name of the journal or magazine.

JSTOR has the full text of journals on Latin American Studies.

LANIC links to journals and magazines is a very comprephensive resource for locating online journals and sites.

Note: Many of the journal titles cited by these non-Ohio University Library sites are "home pages" with or without full-text materials. In most cases full-text rights are purchased by libraries or consortia and can only be accessed by their own users.

Latin American Periodical Indexing Resources

Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI)
The entire UCLA's Hispanic American Periodicals Index, 1970 - current, can be searched online. HAPI contains over 200,000 citations to articles in more than 400 scholarly journals published in Latin America or treating Latin American and U.S. Hispanic topics. Earlier editions to 1990 are also available in print versions.
 
Hints: use the search button rather than back to begin a new search; check subject headings when you find something of interest for more.
 
The Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS)
The HLAS from Library of Congress, noted again later, also cites some periodical articles. Most records include abstracts with evaluations.
 
Earlier editions of the Handbook are also available in printed format and CD-ROM
 
Latin American Periodicals Tables of Contents (LAPTOC)
LAPTOC is a component of the Latin Americanist Research Resources Project, an initiative of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). One can search for specific articles or browse selected periodicals from a cross-section of over 500 periodicals published in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. In most cases, copies of articles must be obtained through Interlibrary Loan from one of the participating libraries.
 
Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO).
This is a growing list of Brazilian scientific journals available on-line, including titles in medicine and the human sciences. Access to the titles/articles is by indexes and search forms.
