General Resources

Good starts for basic research are Academic Search Complete but keep in mind ASC is a multi-subject database, not just focused on literature. The best two to begin with for a general overview of your person, work, or movement are Literature Resource Center and Literary Reference Center-they provide all full text links to biographical information, as well as articles.

If you want to get serious, go MLA (MLA International Bibliography).

JSTOR will be full text of more scholarly articles from the core journals in the field, starting with Issue 1. The EJC is a full text source provided by OhioLINK. It contains all of the journals from Project Muse.

If you would like a little HISTORY FOCUS with your research: (for background information)

  • America History and Life - scholarship on North America only
  • Historical Abstracts - scholarship on everywhere else! For example, you can limit your search to scholarship that was written concerning the Roman Empire. This is not a primary source, these are secondary sources -- scholars who have written about a certain time period or incident in time. We do have primary sources, so if you are looking for those go HERE.

Book Reviews

These databases are useful for locating book reviews, especially more scholarly book reviews, as opposed to the less helpful trade periodicals such as Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, People, Booklist -- these periodicals will only offer snippet reviews, but nothing in depth.

Trade periodicals that are not really useful as thorough book reviews:

  • American Libraries
  • Publishers Weekly
  • Choice
  • Booklist
  • Kirkus
