Radio and TV News TranscriptsThis guide pulls together information about news broadcast transcripts. A given transcript series may have a number of different sources and formats. After some introductory remarks titles are listed and described. Additional title suggestions and corrections are welcome. The sources fall basicially into three types. First, sources for transcripts of broadcasts and webcasts; second, materials provided by translation services; and third, archival sources. An example of the first type—the LexisNexis Guided News Search—is a full-text database service to which the Library subscribes. LexisNexis covers current events, including materials from the U.S. and foreign-language press, wire services, radio and TV news transcripts. Beyond what is found in Lexis Nexis there are numerous original ('the horses mouth' so to speak), regional and subject oriented services. Some with English Language content are mentioned below. Second, translation services—the U. S. Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) and the British Government's Worldwide Monitoring Service (BBC)—have a long history of cooperation. These two translation services, historically and current, are the main sources for English language coverage of local and regional media worldwide. Third, archives—Vanderbilt University's Television News Archives is the best known example. Searching InfoTree under News and Current Events yields a good updated list of potential resources. Be sure to note the "Subtopics" directory. InfoTree will offer some leads not mentioned below, but conversely the level of detail found below is not found on InfoTree or ALICE. Though not its mission, the Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS), on-line since 1972, sometimes has foreign newspaper and wire service transcripts and can be useful for a subject approach. ABC (American Broadcasting Company)The Transcription Company collects and preserves, and also offers for sale, ABC Transcripts from approximately 1980 - current. Other sources include: Microform: ABC Public Affairs Broadcasts 1986 - Mar 1997. This set consists of written transcripts of ABC television news broadcasts. A quarterly printed guide, ABC News Index, (Micro PN4888.T4 A23x) indexes the above programs by subject and names of personalities being interviewed. The microfiche are filed by the title of the specific program in the microfiche periodical section. The production of the microfiche and printed index stopped after March, 1997. ABC News programs included are:
Online: Circa 1991 - current
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (Radio National Australia)ABC Australia has links to recent transcripts and sells program tapes, etc.
BBC 9 P.M. NewsBritish Broadcasting Corporation. Home Service. 1939-1945. The Center for Research Libraries guide Radio Broadcasts and Scripts notes the center has approximately 60,000 pages of newsreader scripts for the 9 P.M. News on microfiche. Please consult the Interlibrary Loan Department on the fourth floor to borrow these materials. BBC SWB Summary of World BroadcastsBritish Broadcasting Corporation. Monitoring Service. The microfilm edition of the SWB, 1939 - 1997, contains summaries of foreign radio station transmissions compiled by the Monitoring Service of the British Broadcast Corporation (BBC.) Coverage began with five countries, but expanded reaching about 140. The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS,) the BBC Monitoring Service's United States counterpart started in 1941 and there has been close co-operation between the two services to co-ordinate resources and share material. For example, if one finds a summary in the SWB and more information is needed, a full text is usually located in the FBIS Daily Report or conversely a summary in the Daily Report will relate to a full text in the Summary of World Broadcasts. The SWB set is filed by title ("SWB") in the microform periodicals section; 758 rolls of microfilm (1939-1972) and 11,500+ microfiche, 1972 - 1997. Note that the microfilm reels are NOT in strict chronological order because of the different geographical series, the microfiche is even more confusing. Through most of its history the SWB has been divided into assorted geographic sections with size, frequency, and groupings varying. From 1939-1946 all parts were grouped in one series called the Digest of World Broadcasts. From 1947-1949 the SWB was divided into three parts (U.S.S.R and Eastern Europe; Germany and Austria; and the rest of the world) and in recent years five parts (former U.S.S.R; Central Europe, Balkans; Asia-Pacific; Middle East; and Africa, Latin America, Caribbean). There is no index to the series, but each issue has a full table of contents. Concurrent is the The Monitoring Report published from April 1940 to November 1996, which is a brief summary of the major items and trends of broadcasting. As we garner the information we will construct a finding aid for the microform.
The SWB was absorbed into BBC's International Reports in March 2001 (see BBC Worldwide Monitoring). BBC Worldwide Monitoring ServiceThe BBC produces the International Report which absorbed the Summary of World Broadcasts, and there is no paper equivalent; see below. All the BBC Worldwide Monitoring Service's daily news service material since 1979 is available through LexisNexis Guided News Search. However, finding BBC Worldwide Monitoring is elusive, so follow these steps:
The Monitoring Service of The British Broadcasting Corporation systematically listens to broadcasts from 120 countries, 7/24, and deals with over 50 languages, monitors over 2000 radio, TV, press, Internet and news agency sources for news, information and comment. In monitoring, the BBC emphasizes information from countries for which other news sources are not readily available. It does not cover the United States, Canada or the U.K. BBC Transcripts:Apparently conditions are not very promising for free access to the other-than-live BBC transcripts themselves but BBC's websites can offer promising leads for those able to take advantage of them. The BBC Written Archives Centre holds files, scripts and working papers from the BBC's formation in 1922 to the 1980s, together with information about past programs and the history of broadcasting. The site may help in research, but of-site access to materials and transcripts is not offered. Exploration of the British Film Institute (BFI) site may provide leads, information about, or access to BBC television material (all since August 1990). The National Sound Archive has preserved recordings of BBC radio broadcasts, but does not distribute them, nor does it offer remote access to its catalog, but browsing the Archive's Web site can be useful in your research. British Pathe Ltd.Though not radio, or television, British Pathe is a media company which produced cinema newsreel until 1970 at which point it had accumulated 3500 hours of filmed history amounting to over 90,000 individual items. This site is digital archive where one can preview (text and images and motion downloads) of items from the entire British Pathe Film Archive which covers news, sport, social history and entertainment from 1896 to 1970. One can keyword search, or advance search the database. After locating an item you may want to "preview film" first, especially if you are on a regular phone line. If you want a free low resolution clip, click the appropriate 'download' button. You will need to register, then file can be downloaded. To play, the clips require Windows media player, or MAC, (Windows Media 8 files, WMV). A fasinating site, higher resolution copies can be purchased. C-SPAN, (Cable Satellite Public Affairs Network)C-SPAN home. A good number of recent programs are available for viewing on the site. Videotapes of most C-SPAN programs are available for purchase from the C-SPAN Archives. Also see www.c-spanstore.com. Transcripts of "Booknotes" programs are available on-line at Booknotes. C-SPAN does not transcribe other programming. CBC News, (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.)CBC home (Société Radio-Canada). Current Awareness, video/audio linksGary Price's Current Awareness Resources via Streaming Audio and Video is a compilation of links to audio and video access to broadcast media enabling the user to monitor current events live. You may want to browse this list to run across archival sources, specific programs, and other goodies. These are cited in the Center for Research Libraries guide Radio Broadcasts and Scripts, consult the Interlibr ary Loan Department, 2nd floor, to borrow these. The FBIS Daily Reports of Foreign radio broadcasts (below) are more extensive.Foreign Broadcast Information Service (U.S. FBIS)From 4 Sept 1941 - Sept/Oct1996 the FBIS published assorted series and area editions of Daily Reports translations from foreign broadcasts, news agency transmissions and sometimes from periodicals and newspapers. In 1996 all FBIS publications were combined and issued on CD-ROM as FBIS Publications. From 1953-1995 the Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS), an auxiliary of the FBIS and the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) produced the Daily Reports.
