There are three different "levels" of searching involved in trying to locate particular books or books a a particular topic.
- ALICE. Search ALICE, Ohio University's online catalog. ALICE will give you call number, location, and availability status for books on all campuses of Ohio University. If a book is not available in the library you are using, you may be able to request it from one of the other campuses using ALICE's "Request Item" button.
- OhioLINK. If no Ohio University campus can provide you with the item, try the OhioLINK Central Catalog, which represents the combined holdings of more than 50 libraries around the state. You may request items through the OhioLINK Central Catalog as long as they are not indicated as available at any Ohio University campus.
- Interlibrary Loan. If no OhioLINK member library can provide you with a particular book, you may wish to try to obtain it elsewhere. You can use WorldCat to locate items in other libraries. Then use ILLiad, our Interlibrry Loan service, to request these items.
If you wish to browse in the stacks, here are some of the specific subject areas and their Library of Congress Call Numbers. Unless otherwise stated in ALICE's Location information, these items will be on the 7th floor of Alden Library.

The Ohio University Libraries have access to more than 200 journals on Environmental and Plant Biology. In many cases, our holdings of the printed volumes of these journals go back many years. In recent years, a number of journals have become available in electronic format. This list of journals (both electronic and print) contains links to ALICE which show our holdings of printed journals and links to the electronic journals themselves, most of which are available through OhioLINK.
Please note that, generally speaking, only very recent years of journals are available online, and that access to them is restricted to Ohio University students, faculty, and staff.
If the title you are looking for is not listed on that list, do a Title search on ALICE:
When you are looking for specific information on a topic, it is usually a good idea to use indexes to help you identify relevant articles. These are the more important indexes for this subject area.
Biosis Previews
- The primary index for articles in the life sciences. The online version covers the biological literature from 1990-present. It indexes over 5500 journals as well as conference literature and book chapters. This database is updated quarterly.
- The print version of Biosis Previews consists of two separate titles:
- For more information about the provider see:http://www.biosis.org/
- For some useful information about the indexing see the Reference Shelf Menu
- For more information on searching, see also The Biosis Search Guide
Science Citation Index Expanded
- More up to date than the above but with narrower coverage; check here for very current articles. If you already possess a few good references dealing with your topic or wish to follow the progress of someone's ideas, make use of the Cited Reference Search feature.
- Click on the title for more information.
Kew Record of Taxonomic Literature Relating to Vascular Plants
- Continues Index to European Taxonomic Literature [Reference QK96.R4] from 1971 to present; now quarterly, and usually about a year behind in its coverage. The current title is broader in its coverage of the literature than was the former title. Subject coverage includes taxonomy, nomenclature, chromosome surveys, chemotaxonomy, anatomy, morphology, embryology, reproductive biology, new species, floristics, biosystematics, bibliography and biography. It is most useful for material on specific families or species of plants; it is also useful in areas like biogeography, where Biosis is weak because of its arrangement. Lower plants and fungi are not covered. Subject and Author approach.
- Call Number: Reference Z5354.C53K48 in Alden Library Reference Department
- An online version of the database currently contains some 175 thousand references published from 1971 to 2000; new references are added once a week. To make full use of this database, you should complete the FREE registration process. The database is available here
Agricola
- An online index to the agricultural literature produced by the United States Department of Agriculture. There are separate indexes for the serial and book portions of this database.
- You may want to look at the advanced search which offers more features.
If you are stuck with a citation that you cannot figure out because you have no idea what the actual title of the journal or conference proceedings is, here are some helpful sources.
B-P-H Botanico - Periodicum - Huntianum. Pittsburgh: Hunt Botanical Library, 1968 (+ 1991 Supplement)
Call Number: Reference Z5353.H85
This work provides standard abbreviations for 12,000 journals dealing with plants; in addition, it includes approximately 12,000 further abbreviations for those same titles found in other works. For non-standard abbreviations, reference is given to the standard abbreviation and from that to the full title. The supplement is a partial revision of the original and expands coverage to 25,000 titles. Another useful source for earlier titles that is more general is World List of Scientific Periodicals, 1900-1960. [Reference Z7403.W923].

Taxonomic Sources
This is a hodgepodge of materials that are of particular use to the taxonomist. Two obvious sources have already been given: Biological Abstracts and Index to Taxonomic Literature.
International Organization for Plant Information
URL: http://iopi.csu.edu.au/iopi/
"IOPI is the International Organization for Plant Information. This organisation came into being on September 20th, 1991, at a meeting at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra, hosted by the Australian Biological Resources Study. Forty-nine botanists from eleven countries participated. The genesis of the new international organisation lay in discussions arising from an initial proposal by Kew to establish, with a consortium of major herbaria, a computerized taxonomic database - the Species Plantarum Project (SPP) - and those held at Delphi, under the auspices of TDWG, in October 1990, to consider the establishment of a Global Plant Species Information System (GPSIS). "
This is a work in progress at this time. The Global Plant Checklist is at its provisional stage and the Species Plantarum Project is under development. Links to the available databases of participant institutions are available. See Berendsohn TAXON 46:283-309. 1997. See also International Working Group on Taxonomic Databases ( http://www.tdwg.org/). "Historically, the International Union for Biological Sciences (IUBS), Taxonomic Database Working Group (TDWG) has addressed data standards for plant taxonomic databases. Membership has encompassed major botanical institutions and projects from around the globe. In 1994, the Work Group was given the role by the IUBS to encompass taxonomic databases in general and now has members in zoology and microbiology." This has links to standards sites.
