In my five years as Dean of Ohio University Libraries, we have struggled with the aging facility of Alden Library. As anyone who regularly uses the building knows, it can be difficult for a building with an old HVAC system — originally designed to take care of 7 floors of books — to now cool hundreds of people and computers, twenty-four hours a day. Every year we invest in repairs that allow us to keep the cooling system going, at least until the next new failure comes along. Luckily, Alden Library is slated for a major upgrade to our HVAC systems in 2015. Until then, we ask for your patience and understanding when things aren’t as comfortable as we would like, and we will continue to work with Ohio Universities Facilities Management to provide an environment conducive to learning and studying. I am very proud of the work that our researchers and staff do every day in Alden Library, and I value each one of your 2 million visits a year. We will do our very best to continue providing excellent services and a comfortable environment.
