Libraries Kicks-off Alt-Textbook II Workshops

On Friday, Feb. 10, the Libraries will kick off the 2017 Alt-Textbook II initiative with “Open Education Resources” (OER), the first of six one-hour workshops offered to instructors to implement alternate resources to replace costly textbooks.

Taught by Kelly Broughton, assistant dean for research and education services, the OER workshop, held in Alden room 251 from 1-2 p.m., will focus on understanding the importance of open resources, finding quality open textbooks, and locating places where faculty can host their own work.

Since 2015, OHIO librarians have successfully collaborated with faculty in the Alt-Textbook initiatives to help alleviate the burden of redesigning courses and classroom syllabi—this session will have the added bonus of incorporating constructive feedback from participating OHIO instructors.

“There are six hours of workshop content this spring,” Broughton said, “and it is all based on the feedback we received last year—where [at that time], it was only 1.5 hours of programmed content, and the rest [of the faculty work] was on their own.”

Besides the benefit of faculty collaboratively working with librarians to move away from long-established textbooks, the Alt-Textbook initiative also helps students save money.

“There are [text]books out here that are $400—that you will never pick up again at the end of the semester,” said Victoria Little, a second-year graduate student in counseling education. “This is a good way around having to buy those books that you may never use again,” continued Little, who was a beneficiary of her instructor, Adrienne Erby, and her participation in the 2016 Textbook initiative.

The 2017 Alt-Textbook series is free and open to everyone—attend all six workshops or just pick and choose—an RSVP is encouraged.

  • Applying fair-use standards to legally use licensed library content in classroom courses;
  • Instructor: Janet Hulm, assistant dean for collections and digital initiatives

Mar. 17: Creative Commons

  • Understanding Creative Commons licenses; and using and applying  them to your work;
  • Instructor: Bryan McGeary, subject librarian for the humanities.

Mar. 31: Learning Management Systems

  • Getting the content to your students using learning management tools:  Blackboard and Top Hat;
  • Instructors: Chris Guder, subject librarian for education, Michael Pistrui, library support specialist, and Kyle Rosenberger, instructional technologist 2.

Apr. 7: Multimedia

  • Discovering open resources and licensed multimedia for use in classrooms;
  • Instructor: lorraine wochna, subject librarian for the performing arts.

Apr. 21: Hack your Course Content!

  • Hands-on time with the experts—applying what you’ve learned;
  • Instructors: librarians, instructional designers, and technologists.
