Alden Library has just inaugurated a new all-inclusive meditation space on the fifth floor, the United Meditation Room. Tucked peacefully away adjacent to a quiet study area, the room is designed with neutral colors and minimalist furnishings to encourage self-reflection by the individuals within our community.

“A meditation room represents peace, tranquility, a sense of space, a sense of inclusion and value. Everyone will be welcome in the United Meditation Room,” said Lorna Jean Edmonds, in a recent Compass story written by Angela Woodward, writer and editor of University Communications and Marketing.

Edwards continued by saying, “Everyone who has been involved in this process has been very thoughtful about keeping the room inclusive by neutralizing it from any kind of cultural or religious biases.”

Held March 2, the ribbon-cutting inauguration of the room included: David Descutner, interim president of OHIO; Lorna Jean Edmonds, vice provost for Global Affairs; Jenny Hall-Jones, associate vice president and dean of Students; Scott Seaman, dean of University Libraries; Shawna Bolin, director of University Planning and Space Management; and doctoral student Hashim Pashtun, whose vision was behind the creation of the room.

“It’s a room designed to strengthen the diversity of our community and to build upon our vision of coexistence – that we aren’t only coexisting with one another but getting to know one another, helping one another and supporting one another,” said Pashtun in the Compass story written by Woodward announcing the room’s creation. “That’s what makes up this Bobcat family that we always talk about, and I think this room will serve as proof of that strong community.”

Converted from the conference room originating out of the office of the dean of University Libraries, the creation of the room required rearranging doorway entrances, removal of technology, and minor updates—all which was funded by OHIO’s Division of Student Affairs. The Libraries will still continue to host and maintain the room.
